Why Commercial Real Estate? How to Answer This Interview Question

Preparing for a CRE interview? Matt Bingaman breaks down how to answer “why commercial real estate?” with confidence, authenticity, and the insight that impresses hiring managers.

Why Commercial Real Estate? How to Answer This Interview Question Like a Pro

If you’re preparing for a job interview at a commercial real estate firm, brokerage, or investment company, there’s one question you can virtually guarantee will come up:

“Why commercial real estate?”

It sounds simple. But it’s one of the most revealing questions in any CRE interview — and answering it poorly can undermine an otherwise strong candidacy. I’ve been on both sides of this conversation, and I can tell you exactly what interviewers are looking for and how to deliver an answer that genuinely impresses.

Why Interviewers Ask This Question

Before we get to the answer, let’s understand the question.

When a hiring manager asks why commercial real estate, they’re really asking several things simultaneously:

  • Do you actually understand what this industry involves? (Many candidates don’t)
  • Are you genuinely passionate about this work, or are you just looking for any job?
  • Have you done your research, or are you winging it?
  • Do your personal motivations and strengths align with what success in this role requires?

The best answers address all of these layers — not just the surface question.

What NOT to Say

Let me start with the answers that will hurt you:

  • “I like working with people.” This is generic and says nothing specific about commercial real estate.
  • “I want to make a lot of money.” While understandable, this answer signals short-term thinking and self-interest without any expression of passion for the work itself.
  • “I have a family member in real estate.” Unless you can build substantially on this, it suggests you fell into the industry rather than chose it.
  • “I just think real estate is interesting.” Vague, uncommitted, and unimpressive.

The Framework for a Great Answer

A strong answer to “why commercial real estate” should have three components:

1. A Genuine, Specific Connection to the Industry

What specifically about commercial real estate resonates with you? This could be:

  • The analytical nature of income-based valuation
  • The intersection of business, economics, and real estate
  • The tangible, physical nature of the assets
  • The complexity and scale of transactions
  • The relationship-driven nature of the business

Be specific. Generic enthusiasm doesn’t stand out.

2. Evidence That You Understand the Work

Demonstrate that you know what working in commercial real estate actually involves. Reference:

  • Specific asset classes you find compelling and why
  • Market dynamics you’ve been following
  • A transaction, deal, or market trend that caught your attention

Show that you’ve done your homework.

3. A Connection to Your Personal Strengths and Long-Term Goals

How does commercial real estate specifically align with:

  • Your analytical capabilities
  • Your relationship-building skills
  • Your entrepreneurial mindset
  • Your long-term career aspirations

The interviewer wants to believe that hiring you is a mutual fit — not just a transaction.

A Sample Answer That Works

“I’ve been drawn to commercial real estate because of how it sits at the intersection of financial analysis and real-world business impact. Unlike other investment classes, commercial real estate requires you to understand not just numbers, but markets, businesses, and human behavior. I find the income-based valuation model genuinely fascinating — the idea that you can create value through operational decisions and strategic leasing, not just market conditions, is uniquely compelling to me. I’ve spent the last year following industrial market trends and the growth of last-mile logistics real estate specifically, and I see enormous opportunity in that space. Long-term, I want to build deep expertise as an investment advisor in that sector — and I believe this role is the right environment to develop those skills.”

See the difference? It’s specific, informed, personal, and forward-looking.

If You’re Transitioning From Another Field

Many people enter CRE from other industries — finance, law, construction, business ownership. If that’s you, connect your prior experience to why CRE is the natural next step:

  • Finance background: “I’ve spent years analyzing businesses and capital structures — commercial real estate applies those same skills to physical assets with unique income dynamics.”
  • Business owner background: “Having operated a business and dealt with commercial leases from the tenant side, I developed a deep appreciation for how much the real estate decision affects a business’s success.”

Your background is an asset. Frame it that way.

The Authentic Answer Is Always the Best Answer

At the end of the day, the most compelling answer to “why commercial real estate” is an authentic one. Know your reasons, articulate them clearly, and back them up with evidence of genuine interest and preparation.
